UCLan (University of Central Lancashire) Students’ Union wants to appoint another Trustee to the board of the Union. This role is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who wants to play a role in the leadership of an organisation that’s run ‘by students, for students’ and has the desire to ‘make life better for students’. You will ensure the Union really does make an impact for our members.

We hope you will have experience of charity governance or leadership in the Union or HE sector; perhaps you have a commitment to the values and aims of student’s unions and would like to give something back. Equally you may be keen to support a campaigning organisation. Ideally we’d like to recruit someone from the northwest who is able to work with a number of other committed external trustees, student trustees and the Chief Executive Officer and able to bring the right balance of challenge and scrutiny to the team.

Role Purpose

To be a member of the UCLan Students’ Union Trustee Board with legal responsibility for the organisation.

  • You will be involved in setting and monitoring the strategy and vision for an award winning organisation that supports over 25000 students, ensuring we have great governance and supporting student trustees.

  • You will be an active member of the Students’ Union Trustee Board working as a team with the other student and external trustee team.

  • Monitoring the performance and impact of the Union against the Union Plan and making sure we do ‘make life better for students’

  • You may be asked to be a member of a formal sub committees relating to specific projects and elements of the Union’s work to support students.

For a more experienced volunteers it will be an opportunity to use your skills and knowledge to support the organisation and the student trustees and ensure we have good governance. For someone developing a career in the students’ union or voluntary sector it may be a good opportunity to develop knowledge about governance, charities as well as insight into the working of a board.

Who will I be working with?

As a external Trustee you will be a member of the Union’s Board of Trustees who share the responsibilities set out above. The Board of the Union is made up of five elected officers of the Union such as the President and Education Officer, four external trustees recruited for their experience and student trustees to speak for students.

• 4 afternoon Trustee meetings, with lunch provided, on campus.

• 3 afternoon short Committee meetings on campus.

• Attend one annual ‘away day’ with the other Trustees.

• Keep in regular contact with other Trustees and take an interest in the unions activities and events.

Your Time Commitment as a Trustee

We hope you will keep in regular contact with other Trustees and take an interest in the unions activities and events. We would also expect that you attend.

Training

The Union will ensure you receive an induction into the role of a trustee and the role and activities of the Union. You will have the opportunity to attend events run by NUS and others so that you develop your skills and knowledge as a trustee.

Payment

The role is voluntary. The Union will all meet reasonable travel and other expenses incurred by trustees in accordance with our policy.
