What we are looking for:

This is an exciting time to be a trustee at Brighton SU as we are currently undergoing significant change, taking a thorough review of all aspects of the organisation to ensure we maintain the highest of standards and give our students the best possible support and opportunities during their time here.

Thus, we are looking for two inspiring individuals to help set and achieve this vision; we would be especially interested to hear from individuals who have experience in finance, commercial operations and law.

Who we are:

Brighton Students’ Union is a not for profit charity representing over 22, 000 students studying on any one of the 5 University of Brighton campuses (in Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings) or at one of our partner colleges ranging from Worthing in the west to Hastings in east.

We are dedicated to ensuring every student’s time at university is the amazing, life-changing experience it should be. We are led by students and work solely for our student members to offer them opportunities to have fun, find a voice, be empowered and get involved with a range of activities.

Who you will become:

We are governed by a Board of Trustees, comprising of 5 full-time elected Officer Trustees, 4 Student Trustees and 4 External Trustees.  The Trustees approve a maintenance grant from the University of over £1m which, covers most of our areas of expenditure.  The Union also secures additional funding from external sources for other specific projects.

There are Trustee meetings at the end of every month (apart from December).  The meetings are split fairly evenly over the year between full Board meetings, the Finance, Audit and Risk Committee meetings and the Staffing Committee meetings.  We try to keep the meetings to a maximum of two hours.

The Board are concerned with the strategic direction, the financial, legal and reputational compliance of the Union and to ensure that there are sufficient resources in place to allow officers and staff to provide a Students’ Union its members can be proud to be part of, participate in and engage with.

What we have achieved so far:

We are proud to have achieved recent successes with Investors in Volunteers, Investors in People, Green Impact Accreditation- Bronze and one of seven Students’ Unions in the UK to participate in NUS’ Alcohol Impact Accreditation 2014-15.
